What Makes Someone
Feel
Good?
If you are
looking at donating clothes then
presumably you have a kind heart and some sense of community. It
is easy to misjudge how you can best help someone.
A kind intention from you will become distorted in its expression by
you if you think you know what another person needs. By that I
mean a person in need won't respond to your gesture as you expect,
unless you first take a moment and a thought to be curious about them
and what life is like for them and what they most need.
How Do I Know What
Someone
Needs?
The first thing
you can do is take a cue from
Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Right at the bottom, meaning the
most fundamental hard-wired need is for physical survival.
It is somewhat useless giving someone money because money has no value
in itself. To make a significant difference in someone's life you
need to take a moment to notice what they lack and then give that of
yourself freely, willingly and without expectation or reward.
What Can I Donate?
Once someone has
access to food and water, in my
opinion the next most profound change you can make in someone's life is
donating clothes, which become their property, their possession.
Clothing not only provides warmth but owning and wearing certain
clothing has a positive psychological effect on a person as well.
So when you donate clothes you are giving much more than just a piece
of clothing.
When Will It be Most
Needed?
Obviously people
need clothing all the time.
In Africa people frequently asked me
and others for our
clothes.
This wasn't about survival but rather ego and status amongst their
friends.
To make a huge difference to someone's life have a look at the people
who are without warm clothing but living in cold temperatures.
These are the people who will receive and fully appreciate a clothes
donation. In New Zealand some children walk to school in winter
without shoes. Or consider the people who are getting back into
work and don't have suitable business clothing.
Where Can I Donate
Clothes?
There are various ways, some cities have charity shops, although the
clothes become stock for people to buy after you donate them. Ask
at your local library or church or food bank, they are usually in touch
with organisations or people in need.
One
Warm Coat is
an organisation, which as the name suggests specialises in getting free
donations of warm coats to people in need during those cold months in
USA.
Dress
For Success is a worldwide organisation that supports women by
providing donated professional clothing.
