Spiritual Poems

Here are a selection of spiritual poems to help you cultivate inner peace, contentment and eventually, self-love. I hope you enjoy these spiritual poems. They each speak of a different aspect of living an authentic, honest and humble life.

Helen Steiner Rice

The better you know God, the better you feel,

For to learn more about Him and discover He’s real

Can wholly, completely,and miraculously change,

Reshape and remake and then rearrange

Your mixed-up, miserable, and unhappy life

Adrift on the sea of sin-sickened strife.

But when you once know this Man of good will,

He will calm your life and say, “Peace, be still” …

So open your heart’s door and let Christ come in

And He’ll give you new life and free you from sin.

And there is no joy that can ever compare

With the joy of knowing you’re in God’s care.

Start Where You Stand

Berton Braley

Start where you stand and never mind the past,

The past won’t help you in beginning new,

If you have left it all behind at last

Why, that’s enough, you’re done with it, you’re through;

This is another chapter in the book,

This is another race that you have planned,

Don’t give the vanished days a backward look,

Start where you stand.

The world won’t care about your old defeats

If you can start anew and win success;

The future is your time, and time is fleet

And there is much of work and strain and stress;

Forget the buried woes and dead despairs,

Here is a brand-new trial right at hand,

The future is for him who does and dares,

Start where you stand.

Old failures will not halt, old triumphs aid,

To-day’s the thing, to-morrow soon will be;

Get in the fight and face it unafraid,

And leave the past to ancient history,

What has been, has been; yesterday is dead

And by it you are neither blessed nor banned;

Take courage, man, be brave and drive ahead,

Start where you stand.

A Brand New Start

Jill Lemming

God sometimes brings us to a place

where answers can’t be found…

Where we cannot see tomorrow,

for confusion all around.

Yet deep inside we realize

that all things work for good…

Even times when we’ve been wounded

and we feel misunderstood.

Don’t dwell on the injustice

and stay focused on God’s heart…

Find forgiveness and go on,

you can make a brand new start.

A Little Prayer

S.E. Kiser

That I may not in blindness grope,

But that I may with vision clear

Know when to speak a word of hope

Or add a little wholesome cheer.

That tempered winds may softly blow

Where little children, thinly clad,

Sit dreaming, when the flame is low,

Of comforts they have never had.

That through the year which lies ahead

No heart shall ache, no cheek be wet,

For any word that I have said

Or profit I have tried to get.

He is Always There

Anonymous

We can’t foresee the turning of the tide

When problems beset us and tears are cried.

Sometimes life deals from the bottom of the deck

Filling us with worry and leaving us a wreck.

The enemy seeks to devour and destroy,

Using deceptions to eliminate our joy.

While walking through the valley, our heads hung low,

The mountain top seems so high, our footsteps slow.

How many times have we traveled this road

To battle the frustrations of troubles bestowed?

Yet when we come to our darkest hour

God demonstrates His infinite power.

It doesn’t matter how bad things might seem,

He always comes through, our faith to redeem.

God will not fail us in our times of pain.

He’ll never forsake us, by our side He’ll remain.

So when we find ourselves at a total loss

Or when the valley seems too wide to cross,

Just remember you’re in His love and care,

Look over your shoulder, He’s always there!

Kindness

Naomi Shihab Nye

Before you know what kindness really is

you must lose things,

feel the future dissolve in a moment

like salt in a weakened broth.

What you held in your hand,

what you counted and carefully saved,

all this must go so you know

how desolate the landscape can be

between the regions of kindness.

How you ride and ride

thinking the bus will never stop,

the passengers eating maize and chicken

will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,

you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho

lies dead by the side of the road.

You must see how this could be you,

how he too was someone

who journeyed through the night with plans

and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,

you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.

You must wake up with sorrow.

You must speak to it till your voice

catches the thread of all sorrows

and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,

only kindness that ties your shoes

and sends you out into the day to mail letters and

purchase bread,

only kindness that raises its head

from the crowd of the world to say

it is I you have been looking for,

and then goes with you every where

like a shadow or a friend.

If you would like to read more in depth spiritual poems I recommend Rumi, Hafiz or simply seek and you will find spiritual poems that resonate with you. Spiritual Poems are like any other poem, when they resonate with your experience it is like you are having your experience mirrored back to you.

When it doesn’t resonate, it can seem like the poet is speaking about something which you have no idea. As always be patient, gentle on yourself and know you have your own unique path.

Self-Esteem Poems, Self-Esteem Help

Self-Esteem Poems

The most relevant self-esteem poems to this website and shadow work. These poems all express the importance of self-acceptance. Ellen’s below is wise and I also love Rumi’s. Although they are not strictly obviously self-esteem poems, they are about complete self-acceptance and that is the crux of self-esteem help.

Be Yourself

by Ellen Bailey

Why would you want to be someone else

When you could be better

by being yourself

Why pretend to be someone you are not

When you have something they haven’t got

Cheating yourself of the life you have to live

Deprives others of that only which you can give

You have much more to offer by being just you

Than walking around in someone else’s shoes

Trying to live the life of another is a mistake

It is a masquerade; nothing more than a fake

Be yourself and let your qualities show through

Others will love you more for being just you

Remember that God loves you just as you are

To Him you are already a bright shining star

Family and friends will love you more too

If you spent time practicing just being you

How to Improve Yourself

Anonymous

Let each man learn to know himself;

To gain that knowledge let him labor

To improve those failings in himself

Which he condemns so in his neighbor.

How lenient our own faults we view,

And conscience’s voice adeptly smother;

Yet, oh, how harshly we review

The self-same failings in another!

And if you meet an erring one

Whose deeds are blamable and thoughtless,

Consider, ere you cast the stone,

If you yourself are pure and faultless.

Oh, list to that small voice within,

Whose whisperings oft make men confounded,

And trumpet not another’s sin;

You’d blush deep if your own were sounded.

And in self judgment if you find

Your deeds to others are superior,

To you has Providence been kind,

As you should be to those inferior.

Example sheds a genial ray

Of light which men are apt to borrow;

So first improve yourself today

And then improve your friends tomorrow.

I Love Being Me

by Gemma Hayton

I can’t run the fastest

I can’t swim the sea

I can’t type the quickest

but I love being me

I can’t kick a ball

or even climb a tree

I can’t roll in the grass

but I still love being me

You see, this is my life

as others would see

they don’t know what it’s like

to really be me

So next time I’m about

rolling down the street

don’t think of me disabled

but someone cool to meet

I have lots I can teach you

I have loads I can share

you will never gain my wisdom

if you just point and stare

So maybe I can’t run the fastest

maybe I can’t kick a ball

but I wouldn’t change being me

not for you, not at all

The Guest House

Rumi

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

Remember the more completely you accept your experience the higher your self-esteem. Poems can speak directly to us and put words to an experience that often prose cannot.

I hope you enjoyed and got some benefit from these self-esteem poems. If you have, or come across, any additional self-esteem poems that you feel express profoundly the work of accepting and owning our complete experience, please contact me.

Journey of Life

Author Unknown

Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others,

It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Do not set your goals by what other people deem important.

Only you know what is best for you.

Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart.

Cling to them as you would your life,

for without them, life is meaningless

Do not let your life slip through your fingers

By living in the past nor for the future.

By living your life one day at a time,

You live all the days of your life.

Do not give up when you still have something to give.

Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

It is a fragile thread that binds is to each other.

Do not be afraid to encounter risks.

It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Do not shut out of your life by saying it is impossible to find.

The quickest way to receive love is to give love;

The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.

In addition, the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Do not dismiss your dreams.

To be without dreams is to be without hope;

To be without hope is to be without purpose.

Do not run through life so fast that you forget

not only where you have been, but also where you are going.

Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.

You Never Know

Author Unknown

You never know when someone

May catch a dream from you.

You never know when a little word,

Or something you may do

May open up a window

Of the mind that seeks the light

The way you live may not matter at all…

But you never know – it might.

And just in case it could be

That another’s life through you.

Might possibly change for the better

With a broader brighter view.

It seems it might be worth a try

At pointing the way to the right.

Of course, it may not matter at all,

But then again it might.

Life

Nan Terrell Reed

They told me that Life could be just what I made it –

Life could be fashioned and worn like a gown;

I, the designer, mine the decision

Whether to wear it with bonnet or crown.

And so I selected the prettiest pattern –

Life should be made of the rosiest hue –

Something unique, and a bit out of fashion,

One that perhaps would be chosen by few.

But other folks came and they leaned o’er my shoulder;

Someone questioned the ultimate cost;

Somebody tangled the thread I was using;

One day I found that my scissors were lost.

And somebody claimed the material faded;

Somebody said I’d be tired ere ’twas worn;

Somebody’s fingers, too pointed and spiteful,

Snatched at the cloth, and I saw it was torn.

Oh! somebody tried to do all the sewing,

Wanting always to advise or condone.

Here is my life, the product of many;

Where is that gown I could fashion – alone?

I hope you enjoyed these Inspirational Poems.

I Am Your Friend

Author Unknown

You may not have ever seen me

But you know that I am here.

You can feel me in your heart

As you enter each new day.

I will always be there for you

I am your friend.

Someone to share the good times

As well as the bad.

I make no judgments by what you say

I just listen with my heart and

Hope to be of help in anyway I can.

I will be there for you now and forever

And always please remember

I am your friend!

The Friend Who Just Stands By

 B. Y. Williams

When troubles come your soul to try,

You love the friend who just stands by.

Perhaps there’s nothing she can do,

The thing is strictly up to you.

For there are troubles all your own,

And paths the soul must tread alone.

Times when love can’t smooth the road,

Nor friendship lift the heavy load.

But just to feel you have a friend,

Who will stand by until the end.

Whose sympathy through all endures,

Whose warm handclasp is always yours.

It helps somehow to pull you through,

Although there’s nothing she can do.

And so with fervent heart we cry,

God Bless the friend who just stands by.

A Special Friend

Rae Scales

You’ve touched my heart,

You’ve helped me through,

My pain and sorrow,

which weren’t too few.

You shared my smiles,

and my tears.

You were always there,

to squelch my fears.

To you my friend and confidant,

I give my heart of love,

My smiles of laughter,

and the hope that,

We will remain friends,

forever and after.

Aizabel Parinas

I believe in angels,

The kind that heaven sends,

I am surrounded by angels,

But I call them friends.

His Way

Copyright by Claytia Doran

He sees the tears you’re crying.

He sees a heart that’s sad.

God knows how hard you’re trying

And why you feel so bad.

So, don’t you go and let Him down

By keeping all the worry.

Don’t turn your smile into a frown

And try to make Him hurry.

Let Him fill your heart with love

And take your cares away.

Lift your eyes to God, above.

Let Him do things ‘His way’.

I Asked God

Author Unknown

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve,

I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey;

I asked for health, that I might do greater things,

I was given infirmity, that I might do better things;

I asked for riches, that I might be happy,

I was given poverty, that I might be wise;

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of man,

I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God;

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life,

I was given life, that I might enjoy things;

I got nothing that I asked for – but everything I had hoped for,

Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered,

I am among all men, most richly blessed.

I like this poem very much. Although not overtly a God inspirational poem it speaks of a profound awareness of reality and how we can help others.

May I Listen

Copyright Michelle

May I listen to your worries,

Though you feel despair,

If you talk with me a moment,

You will see that do care,

Please share with me your sorrow,

Don’t be ashamed to shed a tear,

I’ll listen to your worries,

Try to help remove the fear,

I can not solve your problems,

This is something only you can do,

But talking through your worries,

May give an overview.

Perhaps within the silence,

You might just be aware.

That deep within the silence

Is some one else who cares.

I Threw A Fit

Copyright by Claytia Doran

Lord

I threw a fit, today.

You see, I didn’t get my way.

I expected too much of others.

I didn’t take time to pray.

I tried to do things my way,

Instead of doing them for you.

I ranted and raved and carried on.

I threw a pity party or two.

Lord, I threw a fit, today.

My frustration took first place.

I carried on, with an attitude.

I was ahead, running the rat race.

Then, you smiled and touched my heart,

And I saw the footprints in the sand.

I suddenly felt so ashamed,

As I reached over and took your hand.

I slowed my pace, beside you,

And I felt the glory of your way.

Lord, can you ever forgive me

For the fit I threw, today?

I, Too, Must Weep

Copyright by Claytia Doran

Knelt down beside a mound of dirt,

Only God knows how much I hurt.

For, no one can feel this pain I bear

And no one knows how much I care.

But, before I can dry another’s tears,

I too must weep and have some fears.

For, I must know the pain they feel

Before my comfort, their heart, will heal.

I must walk a mile in my brother’s shoes

Before I can help him, the way I choose.

For, I, too, must know how to feel pain

And bring the sunshine, to hide the rain.

I look for blessings, in all my sorrow,

So I can help someone else, tomorrow.

I praise the Lord, each and every day,

That I can help others along life’s way.

Forget Me Not

Copyright by Linda Shelburn Reagan

Forget me not, for I am there

In the beat of your heart,

On the wing of your prayer.

Forgive me my parting and leaving you thus,

A joyous reunion is waiting for us!

Continue to strive toward your goal and be brave.

Know that my love didn’t stop at the grave.

My spirit is with you through good times and bad.

I share all the joys and the sorrows you’ve had.

Feel my presence within your next breath

And realize there’s no distance in death.

Ask for my help and I’ll answer your call.

Reach for my hand when you stumble and fall.

Run the last mile with a smile on your face.

My arms will be waiting when you finish the race.

Always remember, my love is right there

In the beat of your heart,

On the wing of your prayer.

Appreciation Poetry, Poems

Feel Good With Appreciation Poetry

Selected appreciation poetry including the powerful poem ‘The Old Man’ by Jonathan Robinson.

The Old Man – Jonathan Robinson

Once long ago, there lived an old man.

He had no money. He had no plan.

All that he had was a horse oh so grand

and he and his horse lived off the land.

The King offered riches for this horse oh so fine,

I’ll give you money if you’ll make your horse mine.

But the old man said, My horse will not be sold,

he lives with me. He lives free and bold.

Then one day the horse was plain gone.

The horse had been stolen, the townsfolk cried on.

The old man said, Friends, don’t look so sad,

Though the horse be gone that may not be so sad.

You foolish old man, look what you’ve done.

You had a fine horse and now you have none.

A curse it is and a curse it will be,

you shouldn’t have let your horse wander free!

The horse soon returned with others by its side.

There were twelve now of beauty and pride.

The townsfolk said, Old man, you were right.

You are blessed to have horses of unearthly delight!

I have 12 horses, yes that is true

but that does not mean I am blessed with them too.

It is too soon to judge, who knows what will be?

Try not to make stories from the little you see.

As it came to pass, the old man ‘s only son

tried riding a horse, just for fun.

Yet he broke both his legs while playing this game

and the townsfolk cried, Oh what a shame!

The old man said, Friends don’t speak so soon.

You hear just one note yet you sing an entire tune.

Who’s to say what the future may hold?

My son’s legs are broken but the future lies untold.

Soon there was war, and the young men of town

were all sent to fight and were shot down.

But the old man’s son was saved from this plight.

He had broken his legs, he was forced not to fight.

And the townfolk cried out, Again you were right!

But the old man replied, Have you no sight?

Only God knows what is and will be.

To live and let live is to live and live free.

Be Thankful – Author Unknown

Be thankful that you don ‘t already have everything you
desire,

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something

For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge

Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are

also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles

and they can become your blessings.

Spiritual Poem – Sweet Smell of Life

Sweet Smell of Life by Glenn Smith

Dear Father,

Oh how great it is to be alive

Wonders of the universe abound

I know that You can do anything that You put Your mind to

And so can I

Could I wander through Your garden some more

Just to touch Your flowers

And smell Your scent

Oh how sweet is the smell of life

Crazy are the people who think nothing of nothing

Wonderful are the wonders of being here now

Such sweet perfume

And such glorious aftershave shared within time, but somehow separate too!

I wonder who knows truth

Who cares

Who shows an interest

I know I do

And You do too.

Amen.
